FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Everything you need to know before starting physiotherapy

What is physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession focused on assessing, diagnosing, and treating injuries, pain, and movement dysfunction. It uses a combination of hands-on manual therapy, exercise prescription, education, and various modalities to help restore mobility, reduce pain, and improve overall function. Treatment is individualized based on each person’s condition and goals, whether recovering from an injury, managing a chronic issue, or improving performance.

What should I expect during my first visit?

During your first visit, a comprehensive assessment is completed. This includes a discussion of your medical history, current symptoms, and goals, followed by a physical examination to assess movement, strength, flexibility, and contributing factors. Based on this, a personalized treatment plan is developed, and treatment may begin during the same session.

What should I wear to my appointment?

You should wear loose fitting clothing that allows the physiotherapist to properly assess and treat the affected area. For example, shorts are recommended for knee issues, and a tank top is useful for shoulder concerns. Wearing appropriate clothing helps ensure an accurate and efficient assessment.

Do I need a doctor’s referral?

In Ontario, you do not need a doctor’s referral to see a physiotherapist due to direct access. However, some extended health insurance plans may still require a referral for reimbursement, so it is important to confirm your coverage with your provider.

How often will I need treatment?

The frequency of treatment depends on your condition, its severity, and your goals. Some individuals may require treatment two to three times per week initially, while others may attend once per week or less. Your physiotherapist will recommend a schedule designed to support your recovery effectively.

How long are appointments?

The initial assessment typically lasts one hour to allow for a thorough evaluation and planning. Follow-up sessions may be scheduled as 30, 40, or 60 minutes depending on your needs. Treatment sessions can include manual therapy, exercise, education, and modalities such as heat or ice, with acupuncture also available if appropriate.

What conditions do you treat?

Physiotherapy can address a wide range of conditions including sports injuries, muscle and joint pain, post-surgical rehabilitation, chronic pain, and mobility limitations. It is suitable for individuals of all ages and activity levels.

Will treatment be painful?

Some discomfort may occur during or after treatment, particularly when working on tight or irritated tissues, but it should not be excessive. Treatment is adjusted based on your tolerance to ensure it remains both effective and appropriate.

How do I book an appointment?

Appointments can be booked by contacting the clinic directly by phone or through an online booking system. Booking in advance is recommended to secure your preferred time.

What is your cancellation policy?

If you need to cancel or reschedule, sufficient notice is typically required. Policies may vary, so it is best to confirm directly with the clinic to avoid any potential cancellation fees.
